F. A. Q.

Q: How can I determine whether I have hearing concerns/hearing difficulties?

A: Ask yourself these questions:
  • Do you have difficulty hearing in a group?
  • Do you have difficulty understanding speech?
  • Do you turn the television volume up louder than others prefer?
  • Do you have difficulty hearing in background noise (restaurants, other public places)?
  • Do you have difficulty hearing the telephone ring?
  • Do people appear to whisper or mumble in meetings?
  • Do you have difficulty hearing conversation from room to room?
If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, a hearing loss is suspected.

Q.  What is the price of hearing aids?

A. Hearing aids vary in price depending on what is needed to fit your prescription. In other words, we test to define if a device is even needed, and if so what. We sell every make and model in Canada and the USA and can show you all aids that could accommodate that prescription and the prices attached. Basic price starts at $795.00 and can go as high as $3000.00 per aid. However, do not use price alone to determne the best hearing aid for you. Just because one hearing aid is more expensive than another does not necessarily mean that it will better suit your needs.

Q: How should I be taking care of my hearing aid on a daily basis?

A: The two main enemies of hearing aids are ear wax, "cerumen", and moisture. These need to be dealt with on a regular basis.

Most ears produce some amount of cerumen which is healthy and normal, in fact it is important for a healthy ear! When cerumen gets into the sound channel of the hearing aid, it reduces or stops the amplified sound from reaching the eardrum. Therefore, the wax should be brushed from the sound hole every morning when it has had a chance to dry overnight.

Q: How long can you expect a hearing aid to last and how often will it need to be repaired?

A: The average life of a hearing aid is from four to seven years. It is normal to expect a hearing aid to have repairs after the first two years. The ear canal is 100 % humidity and remains a constant temperature of 98 degrees F. Earwax (cerumen) is a combination of salt and corrosive body acid. These conditions are harmful to circuit and electronics of the hearing aid. As we cannot change the environment that the hearing aids must work in, the hearing aids must be brought in for regular professional care.

Daily maintenance of the hearing aids by the user is also important to reduce repairs on a hearing aid. The use of hearing aid accessories that pull moisture from a hearing aid, can reduce the number of repairs and lengthen the life of the hearing aid and the batteries. Hearing aid accessories and the proper maintenance of hearing aids are an integral part of the hearing aid care.

Q:   How long is my warranty on my hearing device?

A:   Most warranties are usually 2 years however you can purchase additonal coverage for a nominal fee.  All hearing aids are covered for loss for one year.  In other words, if you lose your device in the first year, we will replace it free of charge one time only.
Q:  What are digital hearing aids?

A: Digital aids convert sound waves into numerical codes, similar to the binary code of a computer, before amplifying them. Because the code also includes information about a sound's pitch or loudness, the aid can be specially programmed to amplify some frequencies more than others. Digital circuitry gives a hearing aid specialist more flexibility in adjustng the aid to a user's needs and to cetain listening environments. These aids can be programmed to focus on sounds coming from a specific direction. Digital circuitry can be used in all types of hearing aids.
